Hip Moms 101: May 2009

Who knows what to register for? When I became pregnant with Gideon, I knew that meant the baby showers and registering online, but I had no idea how much baby crap there is out there. Seriously, what will they think of next? It is crazy. And, of course, I thought I absolutely had to have certain things that I could have done without.

Needless to say, I could definitely have used some advice. A friend of mine with a new baby of 6 months old recently told me that she was thinking of starting a business for baby concierge. Basically, a she would meet with the mom and get an understanding of what type of person she was (super-active, biker, jogger, hiker, etc.) and then put together her registry for her. Then, if she needs help with anything else (like the nursery theme) she would also help with that.

I thought this was an excellent idea. Any thoughts?

What is it about babies and cutesy, lace-edged blankets? When picking a nursery theme, it seems as though you have to revert to something only your grandmother would like.

I know that I ran into this dilemma when it came time to pick a theme for my baby boy. There are the typical themes of sports, trains or zoo animals, but what if you want something different? Something edgy and hip? I didn’t know where to turn to for ideas.

Luckily, I went to college in Hawaii and decided that a surfing theme seemed most appropriate. It seemed fun and hip without getting too different or strange. So, now that I picked my theme, how was I to find the right décor to go with it? I looked online and in the stores, but nothing seemed to fit just right. Finally, after mulling it over with my mother, she agreed to make his bedding, rocking chair seat cover and valance. I know, I’m pretty lucky to have such an amazing mother with a sewing talent. But, I know that there are some many other people out there who do not have the luck that I did.

That is why I would put together a list of nursery theme ideas along with links to sites where you can order online the hippest décor and bedding for your little ones room.
